PRESS STATEMENT FROM DPM UHURU KENYATTA
DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER UHURU KENYATTA REJECTS PROPOSED RETIREMENT PERKS FOR MPS
January 11, 2012
Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta has rejected the retirement emoluments parliament passed on wednesday night, saying his time for retire is not yet. He called for its removal, but said President Kibaki , VP Kalonzo Musyoka and Prime MInister Raila Odinga should get their benefits because their time to retire is nigh.
The DPM explained that when he served at the treasury as Finance Minister , he had had to deal with similar demands from MPs . He opposed them twice - if not more - in the conviction that the wage bill must be looked at broadly. This view has not changed. Whats more? No man or woman should be a judge in his or her own case.
The constitution has created a omission that should deal with salaries of all state officers. On opinion polls, the DPM said voters, not opinion polls, will determine the election.
“The chaos of 2007 must never be repeated and this is why jubilee is built on national unity and reconciliation. Kenyans have a right to live and work anywhere in kenya and no leader should be allowed to cause mayhem.
'Jubilee wants to make sure that the economy booms in the rural areas, not just nairobi.' The youth and women must have easy access to credit so that they can start businesses and factories without the trouble of getting collateral”, said the DPM
